Replacement of the Peaceable Street Bridge over the Mourning Kill

Town of Charlton, New York

MJ assisted the Town of Charlton in completing the initial grant application for this project through the BRIDGE NY Program. MJ was responsible for survey, design and construction inspection services under this contract. The project included a full replacement of the culvert and substructure to provide a larger hydraulic opening and re-alignment of the stream channel. The structure was sized to provide bank full width and included scour protection measures. The project also included the reconstruction of the Peaceable Street approaches. Construction of the replacement structure is complete and the roadway reopened with minimal impact to the school bus operations.

The existing superstructure was composed of a jack arch supported on laid-up stone abutments. Three steel rolled girders were supported on cast-in-place concrete abutments that extended the existing structure and was severely deteriorated. The substructures do not align with the stream, that caused flow to be directed at the northwest wing wall, with water getting behind the wing wall and eroding the bank.

The replacement structure consisted of a precast three-sided frame with precast wingwalls. The new span classified the replacement structure formally as a bridge.
