Battery Park Marine Inspection Building Repairs

Manhattan, New York

Under our term contract with the U.S. Coast Guard, MJ led the design to repair the Battery Park Marine Inspection Office Building. The USCG NY Marine Inspection Office Building is a 27,000-sq. ft., three-story office building located at the southern tip of Manhattan on the water. Built in 1958, the building hosts 72 active duty, civilian and auxiliary personnel. Located between the Staten Island Ferry terminal and the embarkation point for tourist ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the building has incredibly high visibility due to its unique location.

The overall project objective was to repair the existing building and associated systems and equipment that were at the end of service life. A multi-disciplined facility condition assessment and alternative analysis report for rehabilitation options was completed, from which final renovation design elements were selected. This two-phased construction project includes upgrades to the building’s façade, HVAC, electrical and site. This included brick façade replacement, window replacement, main entrance upgrades, concrete ramp repairs, and associated site and ADA upgrades.

Sustainable design practices were followed for optimizing energy performance. The design meets hurricane impact requirements. Because of its waterfront location on Manhattan’s coast, specialized design was necessary for high wind resistance.
